The Dancing Hippo a storybook by Bright Hawk and illustrated by Amanda Moore has just received three awards from BookFest for Children’s Book, Cover and Illustration and eBook. Local author, storyteller and musician, Bright Hawk has created a gender-neutral book, “so all children can see themselves in any and all characters.”
Summary of The Dancing Hippo:
The story is about a Hippo in Africa that loves to dance under the moon. The Hippo is told they can’t dance and they their bubble of joy is POPPED. The Hippo gets messages from other characters to remind them about things like “only YOU can Shine Your light” – “Transformation Happens” – and learning to be “Delightfully Surprised” The Hippo defies the naysayers when supported by the community and the story ends with the elephant validating that maybe they were wrong, “Hippos CAN Dance!” The Dancing Hippo award-winning eBook features Bright Hawk’s original music and songs composed on the Hang PanArt instrument and videos of a live action character. The entire story only uses gender neutral pronouns, they/them, so that “all children can see themselves in any character.”
